This is the reverse of the audio-without-picture issue, and it's just as common: the video plays smoothly, but no sound comes through at all, or it cuts in and out unpredictably. Since the picture is rendering correctly, the stream itself is reaching your device fine — the issue sits specifically in the audio path.
That usually comes down to one of a few things: a muted or misrouted output, an audio track mismatch, or a codec your device doesn't decode properly.
Rule Out the Obvious First
- Check that the TV itself isn't muted or the volume isn't set to zero, separate from the streaming device's own volume
- Confirm the streaming device's app volume, if it has one, isn't muted independently of the TV
- Test a different app or source on the same TV to confirm the speakers themselves are working
- Try a different HDMI port, since audio can fail on a specific port even when video doesn't
Check the Audio Output Setting
TVs and streaming devices often let you choose how audio is routed — through HDMI, an optical cable, or the TV's own speakers via ARC. If this setting doesn't match your actual setup, for example set to optical when you're not using one, video will play with no sound. Checking your device's audio output menu and setting it to match how you're actually connected usually resolves this quickly.
Switch the Audio Track
Some channels broadcast multiple audio tracks, such as different languages or a descriptive audio track, and occasionally the player defaults to the wrong one or one with no active signal. Most player apps let you cycle through available audio tracks during playback — look for an audio or language icon in the on-screen controls and try switching tracks on the affected channel.
Update or Reinstall the Player App
Audio codec support can be inconsistent between app versions, especially after an update changes how the app decodes certain streams. If the issue started after an update, checking for a newer version, or reinstalling the app entirely, often restores proper audio decoding.
No-Sound Checklist
- Check TV volume, mute, and the streaming device's own volume separately
- Test another app on the same TV to confirm the speakers work
- Match the audio output setting, HDMI, ARC, or optical, to your actual setup
- Cycle through available audio tracks on the affected channel
- Try a different HDMI port
- Update or reinstall the player app if the issue started after an update
